Last week, we talked about the pros and cons of planting in-ground, so we're back this time to talk about raised beds in all shapes and materials. So let's walk through some of the benefits and drawbacks, so that you can better understand what might be best for you and your garden.
RAISED BEDS PROS
One of the major benefits is that you can fill it with the soil of your choosing. Yes, that's more work in the short-term, but it can be less work in the long run. You can add compost, fertilizer, and the mixes that you choose.
In some cases, containers are also portable. That means you can move plants in and out of the sun/shade to create ideal growing conditions.
One of the biggest perks is that you can grow anywhere! Don't have a yard? That's totally okay and what makes container gardening popular in more urban areas or with renters.
Pest damage is also minimized. This is a huge benefit for people who have lots of gophers in their area. You'll also have fewer harmful bugs too, though.
Along with that, the risk of disease can also be lowered. That's because the plants are higher up and get more airflow. Of course, you still need to plant appropriately and prune as needed.
CONS
It may seem obvious, but you're limited to that space. It's not just about what you see, though. It's also about the accessible soil area.
Raised beds will also dry out more quickly. This can vary based on your material but is especially true for more porous materials like wood and clay.
Raised beds usually come with an added cost. It's definitely not necessary, but it's often the case. I definitely encourage you to get creative to recycle materials!
SO WHAT'S BEST?
It's not a cop out, but both can make sense. Your ability, growing area, goals, and so many other factors will determine what makes the most sense for you.
Like me, there might even be certain parts of your garden or certain plants that you do in-ground or in raised beds. I always think it's a good idea to experiment!
