It's important to start with a short mow to help remove the top layers of the grass and minimize lawn tearing. 5 Steps DIY How to Power rake or De Thatch your lawn Step 1 Determine the height of the power rake. Start at the highest setting and take one pass and check for scalping. If there is no scalping move down a notch and do it again. Step 2 Power rake and cleanup. Run the power rake the same as you would the mower without overlapping passes. Step 3 Power rake the opposite direction or crosshatch and cleanup the debris Step 4 Spot de thatch using a thatch rake. There's a chance that in some areas the power rake will not remove all the debris. In those areas its important to manually remove the debris using a thatch rake. Step 5 Recovery fertilizer.
