In this video, we focus on the five-stroke engine conceived by the Belgian engineer and inventor Gerhard Schmitz, comparing its characteristics to those of the conventional four-stroke engine. We discuss the limitations of the four-stroke design and the methods used to improve efficiency, explaining how the idea of adding an extra stroke originated and detailing its impact on power output and fuel economy.Although the five-stroke engine is still in the development phase, it has the potential to optimize the combustion process and is gaining attention as a new evolution of the internal combustion engine. On the other hand, challenges such as increased mechanical complexity and higher costs remain, leaving room for further research and development.
