Dividing a composite figure into smaller basic figures such as a square, rectangle, triangle, or trapezoid, will help us find its area. We can add two areas to find a total area. We can extend lines, then subtract the area of the missing pieces. We solve a problem to find the area of a deck, then we find how many quarts of water seal would be needed to cover the deck. We see how we can find the area of a composite figure by using subtraction or with addition. We find the area of a shaded portion of a diagram.
