For years, we have heard that there are seven surnames of the lower class. Is this accurate? Today we examine this folklore and decide, conclusively, that this is inaccurate -- and has no basis in fact. Five of the surname groups all have men who passed exams, qualifying them as part of the yangban class. And two of the names do not exist at all in any records. So, we conclude that that his saying is totally without merit.
