Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is considered the holiest month for Muslims worldwide. During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn until sunset, refraining from eating, drinking, smoking, and engaging in sinful behavior. The fast is seen as a way to purify the body and soul, grow closer to God (Allah), and develop empathy for the less fortunate.
Fasting is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, which are fundamental acts of worship and practice that every Muslim is expected to follow. The beginning of Ramadan is determined by the sighting of the new moon, and its exact dates can vary depending on the geographical location.
In addition to fasting, Ramadan is a time for increased prayer, reflection, self-discipline, and charitable acts. Muslims engage in special prayers known as Taraweeh, which are held at night after the obligatory evening prayer (Isha). The Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad during this month, so many Muslims also spend more time reading and reciting the Quran.
The end of Ramadan is marked by Eid al-Fitr, a festive celebration that includes prayers, feasts, and giving to charity, particularly through Zakat al-Fitr (a form of charity given at the end of Ramadan). Eid is a time of joy, expressing gratitude for the strength to complete the fast and sharing with others.
The fasting during Ramadan is not just about abstaining from food and drink; it is also an opportunity to develop spiritual growth, improve moral conduct, and strengthen ties with family, friends, and the community.
