In this lesson, we’re diving into my top 8 classic rock riffs and licks that will boost your technique and bring the fun back to your practice routine.
👉 Practice Tools on YouTube: YouTube has some built-in tools that make practicing these riffs super effective:
1. Slow Down the Speed - Adjust playback to your ideal pace so you can play each riff clean, with accuracy so you can build you speed up.
2. Loopable Clips - I’ve set up loops for each riff so you can focus fully on practicing, with each riff repeating as much as you need to lock it in.
How to Practice These Riffs:
Each riff is arranged from beginner-friendly to advanced, so you can start easy and challenge yourself as you go. First, find a comfortable speed to play each riff perfectly. From there, use what I call the "RPM method"—gradually push to your "red line" zone where your technique improves the fastest. Just remember to take breaks!
The Riffs:
"Man in the Box" - Build your vibrato, slides, and micro bends.
"Suck My Kiss" - Master rhythm, groove, and 16th note picking.
"Every Breath You Take" - Strengthen both hands and refine coordination.
"Need You Tonight" - Focus on pinky dexterity, palm muting, and 16th note strumming.
"Johnny B. Goode" - Improve your 12-bar blues structure, down-picking, and endurance.
"Sweet Child O’ Mine" - Practice alternate picking and string skipping.
"Slash Lick from Sweet Child O' Mine" - Work on bends and lead guitar finesse.
"Thunderstruck" - Perfect left and right-hand coordination with a challenging picking exercise.
