38 Special’s 80s Classic Rock Hit Hold On Loosely came from a great story: it’s one of the most recognizable riffs in music history with a memorable chorus that’s tattooed on your brain at first listen. The catchy title came from a line that singer Don Barnes had heard on on old time talk show, the guitarist, Jeff Carlisi said the riff he was going for was the Cars meets Lynyrd Skynard and they finished it with a Jim Peterik from a rival band Survivor who’s who band mates were upset with him for writing a hit for someone else. This one has all the drama of great rock and Roll story with interviews with the singer and rival band member. the story is coming up next on professor of rock. Today we get the story of one of the greatest songs in classic rock history. It’s 38 special with Hold on Loosely. 38 Special one of America’s great Southern Rock bands formed Florida and was put together by two dons… Donnie Van Zant and Don Barnes in 1974. Donnie van Zant is the the younger brother of lynyrd skynyard founder RONNIE VAN ZANT…DONNIE VAN ZANT, began playing music himself WHEn he was a teen, forming a band called Standard Production in 1968, which paved the way for the band Sweet Rooster, Donnie's first professional outfit that he formed in 1969 with future 38 special alumni guitarist Jeff Carlisi and bassist ken lyons soon to be joined by drummer Steve Brookins. Then Carlisi left Sweet Rooster after his senior year in high school . Carlisi went to study architecture at Georgie Tech his replacement was one Don Barnes who joined in 1970. Then Brookins left to work as a truck driver and Sweet Rooster broke up. However Van Zant, Barnes and Lyons, all continued to work their day jobs and with other bands.. , they began working on composing original songs in their spare time. In 1974 they all decided it was time to go after it with a serious band. As they called it: "one last shot" at success. for a time Donnie Van Zant was about to take a higher-paying position for the railroad, but his bother Ronnie talked him into sticking with music since it was in his blood. The new band made up of Van Zant, Barnes, Lyons, Brookins, a rejuvenated Jeff Carlisis and a second drummer Jack Grondin The band's name came form an incident when they were rehearsing in a warehouse out in the middle of nowhere. Police were alerted by locals of loud noise..When the cops showed up, the band members were unable to come out of the space because a padlock on the door wasn’t budging . One of the cops said, "That's all right. We'll let our 38 do the talking", and he proceeded to shoot off the lock. From then on the band was called 39 specials.
