Join Wayne as he takes a leisurely stroll through Bude, exploring its rich history from Efford Cottage to Compass Point, the Breakwater, and Bude Sea Pool.
• Efford Cottage – Built in 1823 for Sir Thomas Acland, this charming residence overlooks Summerleaze Beach near the mouth of Bude Canal.
• Compass Point – Originally built in 1835 by George Wightwick for Sir Thomas Acland, it has been relocated three times due to erosion, with the latest move completed in 2024.
• The Breakwater – First constructed in 1819, it was destroyed by storms in 1838 and later rebuilt between 1839-1843.
• Tommy’s Pit – Bude’s first swimming pool, built in 1859 for Sir Thomas Acland.
• Bede’s Haven – Named after the holy man Bede, who lived on the breakwater. The area was once called the “Chapel” or “Hermitage” on the Rock.
• Bude Sea Pool – Constructed in 1930 by the Thynne estate as a safe swimming spot for the people of Bude.
