'Kamakura' by Charles Bartlett
Reproduction print process and history
Did you know the Shin Hanga ("new prints") movement in Japan was launched in part through collaborations with European artists? In this video, I document the reproduction of Kamakura, a woodblock print originally designed by British artist Charles Bartlett. Bartlett arrived in Japan in 1916 and became one of the first Western artists to work with the Watanabe Studio—helping to lay the foundation for the Shin Hanga movement.
We'll dive into the early history of Shin Hanga, explore how Bartlett’s work fits within Japan’s broader woodblock tradition, and examine what makes this print so special. You’ll see the entire process—from carving the blocks to printing the first edition with Ayumi-san, a master printer.
