In this video we spend the day along the Central Coast & Newcastle Line with the goal of filming as many V Sets as possible. Operated by Sydney Trains the Central Coast & Newcastle Line is the railway service between Sydney and Newcastle and utilises a section of New South Wales' Main Northern Line. Along with V Sets we also see some of the new Mariyung (D Sets) which are replacing the V Sets, along with some Oscar's (H Sets).
We also see some NSW Trainlink regional passenger trains including some XPT's and Xplorers, and some freight trains operated by Sydney Rail Services, Pacific National, and Specialised Container Logistics (SCT).
Throughout the day we visit five stations along the line;

The V Sets were built by Comeng between 1970 - 1989. With the oldest sets in service dating from 1977 they are the oldest train used in New South Wales and the oldest electric multiple unit in Australia. However after 55 years of service the remaining V Sets are finally being retired with the (somewhat delayed) introduction of the new Mariyung (D Set) trains built by Hyundai Rotem. These new trains first entered service on the 3rd December 2024 and at the time of filming had taken over numerous services along the Central Coast & Newcastle Line.
The new Mariyung's will be introduced on all Sydney Trains electrified intercity services with the Central Coast & Newcastle Line being the first. Their rollout will enable the final retire of the V Sets and enable the Oscar's to be cascaded into Sydney Trains suburban services, which in turn will enable the retirement of the K Sets.
What I've filmed in this video depicts the final months of V Set operation on the Central Coast & Newcastle Line, with the current rumour mill being that the V Sets will no longer run up to Newcastle as soon as July.
