When we last left off in our journey, KISS in 1978 were hurting their image as rock superheroes by releasing a greatest hits album with weird remixing decisions, four solo albums with sounds largely foreign to the KISS fanbase, a bunch of weird merchandise, and a campy, made-for-TV film. Now on the commercial backfoot for the first time in years, the band, under pressure from their label but also tripped out on their own fame, decided to move away from their hard rock sound towards... poppier domains. Come with me as I explain some of the misguided decisions behind the Vini Poncia duology of albums, the decline and departure of Peter Criss, his replacement with the foxy Eric Carr, and the band's rapidly-dwindling returns on the road while embarking on such ambitious, chaotic tours as their 75-date "Return of KISS" tour through America and the Unmasked Tour, which brought them to such far-flung places as West Germany and Australia.
