The Great Fire of London, which erupted on Pudding Lane in early September 1666, is one of the city's most infamous disasters.. Over the course of several dreadful days, the inferno consumed much of the old, walled City, destroying 87 churches, 44 livery halls, many famous landmarks and 13,200 homes. In this video, I'd like to take you on a journey through London's greatest calamity, showing you how the fire developed and spread, the streets across which it raged, what the experience was like for those on the ground, and where you can now see the rare handful of buildings which managed to survived the blaze... **** Chapters 00:00 Intro 01:39 Part 1: Kindling 02:26 Prophecies 04:46 John Rathbone's Foiled Plot 05:47 Part 2: Spark 06:07 Where Pudding Lane gets its name from 08:04 Surviving Houses 09:57 Part 3: Ignition 11:06 Location of the Baker's Oven 11:17 The Great Fire of London Begins 12:08 Fish Street Hill 13:03 Part 4: Flare Up 13:10 Thomas Bludworth: The Lord Mayor of London 13:48 Samuel Pepys and Seething Lane 14:58 London Bridge 16:26 News Reaches Westminster 17:35 King Charles II 18:36 Watling Street and Cannon Street 20:21 Lombard Street 20:33 Queenhithe 21:00 John Evelyn Views the Fire 21:35 Destruction of the Post Office 22:08 Barbican & St Giles Cripplegate 22:44 Surviving Pubs 23:11 Part 5: Inferno 23:39 The Emergency HQ at Ely Place 24:31 17th Century Fire Fighting Equipment 25:49 Cornhill, Threadneedle Street & the Royal Exchange 26:19 Bread Street, Friday Street & Bucklersbury 26:44 What did the Fire Sound Like? 27:33 Bartholomew's Gatehouse 27:48 Homeless Londoners 28:11 The Smoke Plume Reaches Oxford 28:49 Leadenhall, St Katherine Cree & St Andrew Undershaft 29:18 Part 6: Conflagration 29:36 Fleet Street 30:28 Pepys Buries His Cheese 30:57 St. Olave's Church 31:17 All-Hallows-by-the-Tower 31:30 Chancery Lane, Old Bailey & Newgate Gaol 32:01 Guildhall, Gog & Magog 32:25 St Paul's Cathedral Destroyed 33:56 Part 7: Embers 34:25 Inner Temple 35:11 The Wind Changes... 35:31 The Great Fire of London Ends 36:17 Part 8: Ashes 37:21 The Death Toll 38:45 Robert Hubert 39:54 Part 9: Phoenix 40:33 The Golden Boy of Pye Corner 41:03 The Monument 41:44 St Paul's Phoenix 42:10 Outro **** Thank you so much to all of you who support my channel with your kind words, likes and shares.
