Reimagining the Roubo Workbench: A massive maple and walnut workbench with a superpower. Materials: Hard Maple Tops and Black Walnut base. Most of the bench is made from 8/4 stock except the chop which was 12/4 (+ 1/4" of hard maple). Originally I was building a Hybrid Workbench, then I switched to a Roubo, then I designed the bench you see, so I had originally purchased around 180bd/ft of Hard Maple. When I scaled up the bench I decided to make the base out of Black Walnut and added another 150-180bd/ft. I can't say exactly how much wood is in the bench but I can say there was very little waste as I originally selected specific walnut boards for each part of the bench. but I quickly ran short. As I had to use scraps, I got less picky. It was pretty interesting processing finding FAS black walnut with almost no heartwood, but that ended up on the cutting room floor. Dimensions: The bench-top is 27" deep, 6" thick, and 86.5" long. The legs are 6" by 5" thick, and all the stretchers are 3" by 5" thick. The criss cross is 2" squared and the shelving is just under 1" thick. Time: It's hard to estimate how much time I put into this bench, but a substantial amount of time went into reading books and watching build videos, researching parts, designing and redesigning components. The actual build went fairly fast, but it was broken up into many 2-5 hour spurts of work as time permitted. I took over 600 video clips of the build totaling 8TB of footage. My guess is the build took around 120 hours. Thank you for watching this video, I've included some relevant links below.
