No matter what the time period, no matter what the cause, 'war is hell.' This simple principle was as true in the 18th and 19th Centuries as any other. No device of war is ever pleasant, though in its own time, there were few more gruesome than grapeshot. The recent Russian film "Union of Salvation" (Союз спасения) about the Decembrist Revolt of 1825 is a wonderful display of precisely that. In this video, I discuss one of the final scenes of that film which shows the terrible might of artillery on the linear battlefield.
