Amboy, California is a town on National Trails Highway in the Mojave Desert that's located halfway between Barstow and Needles. It was originally a mining camp established in 1858, and named in 1883 when the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad began building tracks through the area. Amboy became a boom town in 1926 after the opening of Route 66. The town's heyday was in the 1950s, when it had several restaurants, gas stations, a train stop, and a bus station.
In 1938, Roy's Motel and Café opened in Amboy and prospered due to its isolated location on the route. By 1940, Amboy's population had grown to 65 residents. The town's heyday was the decade of the 1950s, when there were several restaurants and gas stations in town, as well as a train stop and bus station.
Route 66 is now officially known as National Trails Highway. Some want to rename it Albert Okura Memorial Highway in honor of Albert Okura, who brought his father to work on the highway until just a month before his 100th birthday.
