“Live for each second without hesitation.” — Elton John Adavale is the gateway to one of Outback Queensland’s best kept secrets… the stunning Hell Hole Gorge National Park. Adavale is a township - population around 15 - that is said to be named after a local bride, whose veil flew off into a creek. When somebody yelled “there goes Ada’s veil”, the name stuck. Two buildings stand out here. One is the Adavale pub (aka café, post office and general store). The other is the Town Hall. We dropped into the pub to meet Koss the publican and grabbed a mud map and info sheets about Adavale! The HISTORIC TOWN WALK, MINI MUSEUM and the TOWN HALL grounds are a commemoration of Adavale’s history and culture and are testament to the dry Outback humour of the locals. Other great stops to put on your list is the old police cell, which houses the POLICE MUSEUM and the OLD CEMETERY! We followed the map and ventured a few kilometres out of town, to the 20-acre old TOWN DUMP (circa 1870). Although we do not usually go around checking out other people’s rubbish, this was an eye-opener! Early next morning, we left our caravan at the Town Hall Campgrounds and took the hour-long drive along the unsealed road through privately-operated cattle stations, to the remote HELL HOLE GORGE NATIONAL PARK. This secluded Park is in the arid mulga lands and features Spencers Waterhole and Hell Hole Waterhole, with tree lined creeks, rock pools and seasonal waterholes. We loved Hell Hole Gorge National Park, It is a remote, quiet place for those seeking a little solitude but be warned, when the sun sets an eerie quietness blankets the area. Time to hit the road!
