I ponied up the pounds to purchase Hager’s ‘smart’ AFDD after seeing it on the stand at Elex earlier this month. Although I raised my monobrow at some of the statements Hager were making at the show (see prior video), I nonetheless expected this device to perform its basic job regardless of any additional whistles and bells Hager have stuffed into the package. As you’ll see, things didn’t go to plan. What do you make of it? Is this a failure of my testing or a problem with Hager’s product?
I'm not trying to place any cats among any pigeons here, so if you are attending Elex please don't give the Hager guys and gals a roasting about their wares based on this video. Ask them questions and politely engage with their representatives in a friendly fashion and make up your own mind on what they say. I've nothing against Hager... apart from their pricing sometimes... and I'm not out to cause them any aggro.
Errata:
In this video, I state my Siemens AFDD shows a triple-flash for earth leakage indication. While this is true of the single module Wylex/Crabtree branded AFDDs, this Siemens add-on unit only has a single flashing yellow light which flags a series arc, parallel arc or an earth leakage trip event.
The parallel arc test should be discounted. It's very hard to create a parallel arc in this kind of way and it was very much done on the fly. Later thought and further playing around showed it as flawed.
