AITA For Refusing To Thank My SIL Cause She Had To “Babysit” Her Own Kids?
-----
My brother surprised me with a trip to Scotland for my birthday—a dream destination for me and my first-ever international trip. He planned and paid for everything himself, and his wife assured me she was fine with staying home to care for their kids during our week away. The trip was incredible, and I thanked him profusely for the thoughtful gift. I thought everything was fine—until three days after we returned.
Out of nowhere, my sister-in-law sent me an angry text, accusing me of being ungrateful for not thanking her for “babysitting” her own kids while I was “off having fun with her husband.” Her words were cutting and bizarre, framing the situation as though I had imposed on her. I calmly replied that I didn’t see how caring for her own children was a favor to me, but this only enraged her further. She called me names and said I was selfish. When I turned to my brother for help, he shocked me by siding with her, saying the trip wouldn’t have been possible without her “sacrifice” and that I should have thanked her.
Despite already thanking both of them when the trip was planned, I sent her a polite message of thanks to keep the peace. But it wasn’t enough. She claimed I wasn’t sincere and managed to convince my brother to go low contact with me. It left me heartbroken and confused, wondering how a trip that was supposed to strengthen our bond had instead fractured it. Over time, I began to uncover deeper issues in their marriage, but by then, the damage to my relationship with my brother was done.
