Hi , I Am Rahul Chaudhary, I am a traveller .
Kada Dham: A Sacred Pilgrimage Site in Uttar Pradesh
Introduction
Kada Dham is a well-known religious and historical site situated in the Kaushambi district of Uttar Pradesh, India. The site is famous for the Maa Sheetla Devi Temple, which is considered one of the 51 Shakti Peethas. It is believed that the right hand of Goddess Sati fell here, making it a highly revered pilgrimage destination for Hindus.
Religious & Mythological Significance
According to Hindu mythology, the Shakti Peethas were formed when Lord Vishnu cut the body of Goddess Sati into pieces to pacify Lord Shiva’s grief. These body parts fell at different locations across India, Nepal, and Bangladesh, which later became sacred Shakti Peethas. At Kada Dham, the right hand of Goddess Sati is said to have fallen, making it an important spiritual site.
The temple is dedicated to Maa Sheetla Devi, a form of Goddess Durga who is worshipped for good health and protection from diseases like smallpox and chickenpox. Along with Sheetla Devi, the temple complex also houses a Mahakaleshwar Shiva Lingam, which is believed to be self-manifested.
Historical Background
The temple’s origin dates back to the Dwapar Yuga (the era of the Mahabharata). It is believed that Yudhishthira, the eldest Pandava, established this temple after receiving divine instructions. The temple has undergone several reconstructions over centuries.
Apart from religious importance, Kada Dham also has historical significance as it was once an important seat of power. Raja Jaichand of Kannauj, known for his association with the legendary battle against Prithviraj Chauhan, had his fort in Kada. The ruins of his fort still exist near the temple, making it an important historical site as well.
Location & Accessibility
Kada Dham is located in Kaushambi district, Uttar Pradesh, about 70 km from Prayagraj (Allahabad). The nearest railway station is Sirathu, which is about 10 km away. The temple is well-connected by road and can be easily reached from major cities like Prayagraj, Varanasi, and Lucknow.
Festivals & Celebrations
Kada Dham is known for its grand annual fairs and festivals:
1. Ashadha and Sawan Mela (Monsoon Fair) – A seven-day festival celebrated during Saptami and Ashtami of the Ashadha and Sawan months. Thousands of devotees visit the temple to seek blessings.
2. Navratri Puja – Special Navdurga celebrations take place in the temple during Chaitra and Sharadiya Navratri. Devotees observe fasts and participate in grand rituals.
3. Shivratri – Since the temple complex also houses a Mahakaleshwar Shiva Lingam, Maha Shivratri is celebrated with great enthusiasm, with thousands of devotees offering milk, water, and bilva leaves to Lord Shiva.
Religious Practices & Beliefs
The temple has a sacred pond, where devotees perform ritual baths and offerings of milk, water, and fruits, believing that their prayers will be answered.
Many childless couples visit the temple, believing that the blessings of Maa Sheetla Devi will help them conceive.
Pilgrims from across Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and other nearby states visit Kada Dham throughout the year, but the highest footfall is seen during the annual fair.
