Akira Nakai's RWB Porsches: Art or Overpriced Garbage?
Akira Nakai, one of the most legendary automotive tuners, revolutionized car customization with his creation of RAUH-Welt Begriff (RWB). Born in a small Japanese town, Nakai’s love for cars began in his youth. Without formal training, he learned through trial and error, drawing inspiration from underground racing and Japan’s drift culture. As a member of the “Rough World” crew, Nakai became a key figure in the drift scene, modifying Toyota AE86s with oversized wings, aggressive flares, and bold aesthetics, earning recognition for his rebellious style.
Nakai’s fascination with the Porsche 911 in the 1990s marked a turning point. While others revered the 911 as untouchable, Nakai saw it as a blank canvas. In 1997, he opened his workshop, RWB, in Chiba, Japan. His first build, a Porsche 930 named “Stella Artois,” showcased his innovative wide-body designs, handcrafted with surgical precision using air saws and riveted carbon fiber fenders. Inspired by the 993 GT2 race cars, the build blended raw aggression and elegance, redefining Porsche customization.
Word of Nakai’s unique style spread rapidly across Japan, leading to immense demand. To maintain his personal touch, Nakai implemented a strict rule: one RWB build per customer. Soon, his artistry gained global attention. His first international RWB build, “Rough Evolution,” was completed in Thailand. Mark Arcenal of Illest then brought Nakai to the U.S., where builds like “Pandora One” and “Hoonigan” introduced RWB to American car culture, cementing Nakai’s reputation worldwide.
An RWB build is more than a car—it’s an event. Nakai works entirely by hand, often completing projects in days, while enthusiasts watch in awe. Each build reflects collaboration with the owner: Nakai selects colors and body styles based on their personality, ensuring no two RWB Porsches are alike. He gives each car a unique name and serial plate, further emphasizing the individuality of his work.
Today, RWB has grown into a global movement, with Nakai personally building cars in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. Despite a years-long waiting list and soaring demand, Nakai remains humble, crafting each Porsche with passion and precision. His story is a testament to creativity, individuality, and dedication, inspiring car enthusiasts and artists worldwide. Akira Nakai and RWB continue to redefine the automotive world, one masterpiece at a time.
