Akiya has become big news across the world. The first wave of international interest really kicked off around 2014 when it kept making the headlines. Now in 2024, with Japan being one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, it's trending more than ever.
But what is an Akiya?
I've had so many questions over the past year about these properties and there seems to be so much missing information and understanding. I've collected those questions and put them and more into this video.
My goal for this video is to fill in as many information gaps as I can. Feel free to add any follow up or additional questions!
Also, I've added some interesting discussion topic questions within the video - would love to hear your feedback and comments!
One thing I forgot to add in the question - “Why are there so many Akiya?” - There is a more complicated reason here related to inheritance issues and ownership knowledge hurdles.
When an owner passes away and does not leave it to someone / change the deed name, it is very complicated to buy/sell these houses. Plus, some properties (especially land) are still in an original owners name from hundreds of years ago. This person will of course not be around to sign over the titles and both of these issues create big problems in Japan. There is no clear process of handling these properties. In many cases, they are thought to be forever Akiya as ownership can not be changed.
My sources for information on this is from the local government in Niigata prefecture. This might different in place to place but it seems to be true for my area and it makes sense when I travel around Japan and see some pretty impressive property locations with nobody living there and being left for nature.
