In December 2023, the Metrolink River Subdivision's West Bank Line underwent significant upgrade work as part of a systemwide shutdown of the Metrolink system for work. However, Amtrak into Los Angeles wasn't cancelled, and instead ran on a modified detour route, taking it on a bypass of LA Union Station along the east side of the river, and down the Alameda Corridor for a maneuver to get the Surfliner and Southwest Chief trains onto the normal transcon routing. The starlight also ran on a modified route up the East Bank Line as well.
I spent the whole day at Redondo Junction to get these rare Amtrak detours on the Alameda Corridor for the first, and likely only time for many years. I also caught a ton of freight trains as well from the UP and BNSF, that also used the Alameda Corridor as part of their normal routing from LA to the ports. Thanks for watching!
