Exploring historic pubs in the area where the City of London meets the East End. Incudling one of London's most famous old pubs, the Hoop and Grapes, and I think I've managed to unearth some history about it I haven't seen published anywhere else.
The usual mixed bag of history along the way: the sugar refineries of Whitechapel, John Sebastian Helmcken and the formation of Canada, The Half Moon Theatre, the very short reign of Frederick III of Germany, a landlord who died of a cat bite, the Whitechapel Murders / Jack the Ripper, the primary UK hub for canary trading in the 1890s, and the intertwined history of pubs and music halls.
