A warm welcome to internationally renowned architect Amanda Levete as our guest speaker. Winner of the Sterling Prize in 1999 for the Media Centre at Lord’s Cricket Ground, London and the Jane Drew Prize in 2018. In her acceptance speech for the Jane Drew Prize, Amanda recalled that upon arriving to present their competition entry for the Media Centre years earlier with Jan Kaplicky, they were asked to wait outside because Jan did not have a tie and women were not allowed into the pavilion. Astonishingly as she noted they took on a foreigner and a woman to take on a scheme that was radical both conceptually and technically. The Media Centre led to Selfridges in Birmingham, and other projects until 2009 when Amanda formed Amanda Levete Architecture AL_A. Over the years, the firm has developed a distinct and diverse office culture. A desire to be conceptually and technically inventive makes their buildings special and audacious. They are interested in history, context, circumstances of each project and research possibilities of materials, structures and production. The firm’s portfolio is an impressive one of public buildings and spaces and museums. Some of the major ones include the V&A Museum in London, MAAT in Lisbon, Galleries Lafayette in Paris, Maggie’s in Southampton and Wadham College in Oxford.
