Growing up, we were sold a narrative that the U.S. is a meritocracy, the “land of the free,” the “greatest country in the world,” and that America does everything better — including offering the highest quality of life. But after experiencing life both in the U.S. and abroad, I realized these promises didn’t hold up for everyone. I’ll dive into the lies we were told about success, opportunity, and living the “best” life, and why I ultimately had to leave the U.S. to find a different version of the American Dream.
