An Indian politician, Swatantra Dev Singh was appointed as UP BJP President by Amit Shah on July 16, 2019. Swatantra Dev was born in Ori village of Jamalpur Block in Mirzapur district of Uttar Pradesh and is well-known for his work done in Orai, the administrative headquarters of Jalaun District. Earlier, Swatantra Dev Singh worked as a journalist and his name was Congress Singh. He joined RSS and ABPV in his earlier days and later, joined college politics and changed his name to Swatantra Dev Singh. The political journey of Swatantra Dev Singh started in 1986 when he joined RSS as a Pracharak. Later, in 1988–99, Swatantra Dev Singh became a member of Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) where he was given the charge of Kanpur BJP Yuva Morcha in 1991.
Swatantra Dev Singh lost Vidhansabha Election in 2012 but won the same in 2017 and became the minister in Yogi Adityanath’s Cabinet. After Lok Sabha Election 2019, BJP President Amit Shah appointed Swatantra Dev Singh as the BJP state chief of Uttar Pradesh. Currently, Swatantra Dev Singh is also serving as the Minister of State with Independent Charge for Transport & Protocol and Minister of State for Power in the Government of Uttar Pradesh.
