This is my unique, mostly enjoyable, occasionally frustrating experience riding overnight on the Amtrak Auto Train from Lorton, VA to Sanford, FL. The 855-mile train got a late start, dinner was after midnight, and we rolled into Sanford several hours after the scheduled time. But, my travel partner and I were in a bedroom, the highest-class accommodation that had its own private bathroom and shower. The sleep was good, the company was pleasant, and the food, when available, was superb. Plus, my car made the trip safe and sound.
Ignore the hype – this is what the Amtrak Auto Train experience is *really* like.
• Trip cost: $1,060 (two people in a bedroom, plus the car; meals included)
