Welcome aboard Amtrak Pacific Surfliner Train #777, the weekday train from San Diego, CA to San Luis Obispo, CA! Today we will only be traveling along the section of track from San Diego to Los Angeles. Our train today is led by Surfliner Cabcar with a newly-built Siemens SC-44 "Charger" locomotive pushing us on the rear. Our stops along the journey will be Old Town, Solana Beach, Oceanside, San Juan Capistrano, Irvine, Santa Ana, Anaheim, and Fullerton. Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner route is one of the most scenic train routes in the country, offering unprecedented views of the Pacific Coast, especially around the San Diego Metro. This video is no exception, with plenty of displays of the Pacific Ocean sometimes less than 100 feet away from the tracks. The Pacific Surfliner is Amtrak's busiest route outside of the Northeastern United States, surpassed in ridership by only the Acela Express and Northeast Regional services. The route is also one of the faster routes in Amtrak's network, with speed limits as high as 90 MPH on some sections of track. As a result, the Pacific Surfliner falls into the category of higher-speed rail, meaning that speeds greater than 79 MPH are achieved. While most Pacific Surfliner trains run between San Diego and Los Angeles, a few continue further north and terminate at either Goleta or San Luis Obispo. Track ownership varies among different points of the route. From Union Station to Fullerton the trackage is owned by the BNSF Railway. From Fullerton to the Orange County-San Diego county line, the trackage is owned by Metrolink, the commuter rail agency for the Greater Los Angeles area. From the Orange County-San Diego county line to San Diego Santa Fe Station, the trackage is owned by the North County Transit District, the operator of the COASTER commuter rail agency. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the journey!
