This video is a deep dive into the rampant eating disorders, disordered eating, and energy deficiency among high school female distance runners, and the reverberating impacts that has on their careers moving forward. I have personally experienced the damage that an energy deficit during the developmental years can cause, and it is heartbreaking. The problem is systemic, multifaceted, and complex, yet I do think there are some actionable steps that can be taken to improve it. I also want to note that the people I used as examples in this video are people that I respect and appreciate. No one's career is over until they say it is, and I believe that everyone has the power to change. Additionally, some of the highly achieving athletes I mention may have had their own struggles as well, I was just highlighting the prevalence of non-linear high school trajectories among female athletes.
