The Sinulog Festival is a cultural and religious festival held every year on the third Sunday of January. It is one of the largest festivals in the Philippines. The word "Sinulog" comes from the Cebuano adverb "sulog", which means "movement like a water current".

The Sinulog dance is performed to the beat of drums, with dynamic movements that mimic the flow of a river. It is a ritual dance that celebrates the Filipinos' acceptance of Christianity and worships the Santo Niño.

In 1521, Magellan landed on Cebu Island with a Spanish fleet and presented a statue of the baby Jesus to King Humabon and his wife, Queen Juana, as a gift for Christian baptism.

According to legend, when Queen Juana, the wife of King Humabon, received the Santo Niño, she danced a dance of joy with the statue.

And the natives were so moved by Queen Juana dancing with the Santo Niño that they started dancing with her, which is said to be the origin of the first Sinulog.

In 1565, the Legazpi fleet landed on Cebu Island and tried to build friendly relations with the natives, but they were attacked, so Legazpi burned down the entire settlement and drove the residents into the mountains.

The next day, amid the flames of war brought by the Legazpi fleet, a soldier by chance discovered a Santo Niño statue in a Spanish wooden box wrapped in white cloth in the ruins of the village.

It was a gift from Magellan to Juana, wife of King Humabon, 44 years earlier.

It was considered a miracle that the statue escaped the flames and was found almost intact, and it came to be worshipped as a miraculous icon.
