An unfinished ancient palace in the mountains of Kazakhstan. Akyrtas. #Kazakhstan #Taraz #vanlife
The significant Akyrtas palace complex is located near the city of Taraz, Zhambyl region. It is a monument of medieval culture and is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The history of the majestic structure is intertwined with many secrets, so scientists to this day put forward theories regarding its appearance. The current Akyrtas is the ruins of huge stone blocks, the construction of which in the distant past was almost impossible, which has already baffled many scientists and ethnographers. The palace building consists of four parts, and the complex itself includes open-pit mines intended for mining, a park and residential buildings. The walls of Akyrtas are very dense and strong, and the height of the foundations of the buildings is as much as 4 meters. Residents of the complex were supplied with water because there was a water supply system from nearby springs.
Akyrtas is the name given to the remains of an ancient complex, which was built of red stone. “The Last Stone” is the literal translation of the name of this area near Taraz. A tourist who has not heard of Akyrtas (or Akyr-Tas) will not see anything special here: outside the gates of the state monument there is only a mass of shapeless blocks. But inquisitive travelers who read about the mysteries and wonders of this place before their trip will have even more questions. Several years ago, the Akyrtas ancient settlement was included in the national list of sacred sites in Kazakhstan.
The structure of these giant stones was built more than a thousand years ago.
Scientists are still wondering what Akyrtas was - a temple, a palace or a caravanserai? And who wanted to build such a grandiose structure in a deserted steppe? There are many versions, and they all sometimes contradict each other. Thus, the Buddhist monk Chan-Chun, who was looking for the elixir of immortality for Genghis Khan, considered this building to be the remains of a Buddhist temple. The famous orientalist Vasily Bartold, who visited Akyrtas at the end of the 19th century, found here stones with images of fish (which were one of the main symbols of Christianity). He suggested that it was a monastery of Nestorian Christians. Another version was put forward by academician Karl Baipakov. He considered the Akyrtas settlement to be the headquarters of the Karluk Khagans, who ruled the region from 766 to 893. Other academic researchers are of the opinion that such a grandiose construction could only be completed by such a very powerful ruler as the Arab commander Qutayba ibn Muslim. The time of his reign in Central Asia coincides exactly with the estimated time of construction of Akyrtas.
It was not possible to fully realize the plan to build this grandiose structure. Akyrtas was never completed.

As a child, I really liked to sleep in the car rather than in the house. Now it turns out it was car camping! Such a vanlife! I live in my car quite professionally. In Western countries, a special term was coined during the night in the car and in Vanlife - boondocking. It means a VanLife night in a car in a random place not intended for overnight stays in a car with a completely absent VanLife infrastructure in this place. For some reason, in our country another definition of vanlife is more common - carcamping, that is, a narrower phenomenon. People on the way somewhere spend the night in a car somewhere in the middle of the forest.
