The Galeras Volcano, located in Colombia near the city of Pasto, is one of the most active and dangerous volcanoes in the world. On January 14, 1993, a tragic event occurred at this volcano that would mark a somber chapter in the history of volcanic research. An international group of volcanologists gathered in Pasto for the UN Conference for Natural Disaster Reduction. A group of scientists ascended Galeras, led by Dr. Stanley Williams, a renowned American volcanologist. While they were at the crater's rim, Galeras unexpectedly erupted. The explosion was sudden and violent, releasing a pyroclastic surge of hot gases and volcanic material. 0:00 Introduction 0:38 The Galeras Volcano 2:55 Precursor to 1993 Eruption 5:22 The Research Expedition on Galeras 16:05 The Galeras Volcano Disaster 23:57 The Rescue 29:18 The Aftermath 36:04 Conclusion/Survival & Safety Tips Please fuel Outdoor Disasters by buying me a cup of coffee! https://buymeacoffee.com/outdoordisasters If you haven't yet, please subscribe by clicking here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCsrtvSjgVg8QgRJzysB55xA?sub_confirmation=1 Music by Scott Buckley "Omega" DISCLAIMER: All materials in these videos fall within the guidelines of fair dealing/fair use.
