Angel Meadow was built in the late 18th Century to house the rich and elite of Manchester. As the city grew, though, these people moved further away, and the streets and buildings instead became the homes of the poor and the destitute.

Immigrants, large families, poor people all descended into Angel Meadow, and this relatively small area became crammed with 30'000 people. Amongst them were criminals, thieves, beggars, murderers and more.

Angel Meadow became the unwanted and forgotten spot on the map of Manchester. The area became run down and was plagued by disease and death, becoming known as Hell on Earth.

Today, the area is a rate green space in the bustling metropolis of Manchester City Centre....but below the ground is the history of the people who were here before. 40'000 people buried here over just a 28 year period.

Angel Meadow, a place where people were born, lived and died in misery and darkness.
