It was another interesting year, on the one hand I had the largest variety of adventures ever - spanning 5 countries and a large combination of winter and summer trips and objectives. On the year hand, I had many trip were I had to bail, either days before heading out or even 30 meters (vertical) from the summit. I was greatly humbled & experienced new challenges in various terrain. To illustrate this point further, here is a summary: Mt. Hector - had to abandon pushing to the summit about 30m from it at the pass due to congestion in the small climbable section to access the summit, being a sunny day in the spring there was concern of worsening spring conditions & lastly my group as a whole was not prepared for the last technical section. Red Peak - Took one approach using the ridge & came across a snow covered narrow section the rest of my group was not comfortable crossing. Sir Wilfred Laurier - Had to bail near the being of our approach due to worst bushwhacking I ever experienced (a BW5 on the bushwhacking grading system http://www.alpenglow.org/themes/subalpine/brush-ratings.html) Cathedral Mountain - On the mourning of the entire range was sub-merged in a inversion and did not want to attempt this one in a white-out, the glacier traverse would have not been the best idea in a whiteout Rhondda - Had to cancel due to a forecast blizzard on the planned summit day Emerald Peak - Had to turn around 100m (vertical) from the summit due to low cloud cover covering the peak causing a whiteout in the winter - would have not been a safe bootpacked / ski with the more technical terrain near the summit Some of these were good calls, some were just getting unlucky with the weather. But in mountaineering, failure is the norm - otherwise you won't get to enjoy the passion for long. There is always another day and redemption is always sweet.
