1/4 teaspoon is ideal... Any amount of wood ash will ignite a cotton fire roll but again, 1/4 tsp is ideal. I prove that today with 1/10th of a quarter tsp of wood ashes in 6” of cotton and then with a completely overfilled, ashes covered 6” piece of cotton.
Simply put, USUALLY, too little ash makes an easy ignition that lack enduring heat. Too much ash makes a more difficult ignition that produces great and enduring heat. Once again, stick with a 1/4 tsp of ashes for the best of both extremes.
