Shortly after the Reversion of Okinawa from U.S. administration to Japanese control the island hosted the 1975 World Ocean Exposition - dubbed Expo '75. The success of the Aquapolis was so well-received that the theme of oceans would be repeated at Genoa's Expo '92 and Lisbon's Expo '98.
On this day after Christmas, 1989, we took off for a day or two up north which included a stop at the old Expo'75 site and a tour of the centerpiece - Aquapolis. The structure is no longer in existence. Due to a significant drop in tourist attendance Aquapolis was closed in 1993 and in October, 2000, it was dismantled and hauled off to Shanghai to be scrapped.
