While approaching Katta, as the composer calls himself, we explained the concept behind ArtSourced and he turned up with the band to give us an amazing performance that left us mind-blown. Listening to their songs still continues to give us goose bumps and we are overjoyed to be sharing it with everyone. Hoi Hoi Makbil is a band associated with the Hoi Hoi Guild, which stands for being the voice of the voiceless (ku•ranggri na ku•rang). It was founded with the intention and a passion to preserve the tribal traditions of the north-east region. The band is made up of passionate individuals with a love for music and growth. The Band currently consists of (as they call themselves) KattaNisa, Bossu, Mr. One, Makbil, DeepakWaves, Miss Bundle, Heanlee, Cherry, Trust. In the opening song, 'Suri Makbil' (0:06), the band presents a parable to the listeners which revolves around polar bears (truth-seekers) being hunted by hunters in the Poles using little hooks kept inside a fish to kill the bears. With gently sung lyrics vividly narrating the story, accompanied by the use of both modern and traditional instruments, what we get is a polished product of a rich and active imagination. In his own words, the artist describes the second song, 'Bindori' (08:00), as: "A song about a traveller who is on the run from an entity/ the universe/ or God, whatever name you want to give it, but ends up seeing 'It' again with the embrace of nature at 'It's foothold, and saw the solemn cry of nature chained by human selfishness. This song is intended as a wakeup call to people." In the final song, 'Kil' (15:11), Hoi Hoi Makbil unfurls another story with a “neo-jazzy/soul” tone lifted high with a sing-along chorus. Briefly describing the song, the artist has shared that the song is about Kilbie (a creature that embodies Love). A little girl collects Semal from the Semal tree unceasingly every year in its season. Eventually she gets old and dies but because of her love, Kilbie was given life and born. It travels to Mt. Durama and eventually meets Tongte Gonge, another creature which the artist has said he will sing about in the future.
