বাংলাদেশ সম্প্রতি দক্ষিণ-পূর্ব এশিয়ার ১০টি দেশের সমন্বয়ে গঠিত আঞ্চলিক সহযোগিতা সংস্থা আসিয়ানে যোগদানের আগ্রহ প্রকাশ করেছে, যার মূল লক্ষ্য বাণিজ্য, পারস্পরিক সম্পর্ক ও আঞ্চলিক স্থিতিশীলতা বৃদ্ধি। সার্কের অভ্যন্তরীণ দ্বন্দ্ব ও অকার্যকারিতার প্রেক্ষাপটে এ সিদ্ধান্ত নেওয়া হয়েছে। মালয়েশিয়া ইতিমধ্যেই বাংলাদেশের সদস্যপদে সমর্থন জানিয়েছে, যা আঞ্চলিক বাণিজ্য, প্রযুক্তি বিনিময় ও কূটনৈতিক সম্পর্ক জোরদারে নতুন সুযোগ সৃষ্টি করতে পারে।
