After seven days and nearly 250 kilometers (155 miles) of freezing temperatures at night, a sandstorm, frigid slot canyons, sand dunes and stunning lunar landscapes, the 16th Edition of the Atacama Crossing came to a close at the foot of the Magic Bus in the middle of Moon Valley in the Atacama Desert of Chile with Bilbo Baggins of the UK and Diana Melo Reyes of Colombia crowned the champions. Diana Melo Reyes was the first from Colombia to ever win the Atacama Crossing or any RacingThePlanet Ultramarathon. A huge congratulations to all who participated especially the 107 racers who made it to the finish line.

RacingThePlanet's 4 Deserts Race Series is a collection of four, 250 kilometer, six stage footraces across the world's largest and most forbidding deserts including the Gobi March in Mongolia, the Namib Race in Namibia, the Atacama Crossing in Chile and The Last Desert in Antarctica. There is an additional race, the RacingThePlanet Ultramarathon which roves to a new location each year.

Competitors are challenged to go beyond the limits of their physical and mental endurance. Racing self-supported in the most inhospitable climates and formidable landscapes, they must carry all their own equipment and food and are only provided with drinking water and a place in a tent each night to rest.

The series, named again by TIME magazine in 2010 as one of the world's Top 10 Endurance Competitions, comprises the Atacama Crossing in Chile, the Gobi March in Mongolia, the Namib Race in Namibia and The Last Desert in Antarctica.
