A DIY food tour is the perfect way to explore a new city on a budget. So much of our local cultures are shared through our food, and Athens is no different.
Greece is known for its tasty food, so we developed this list of top spots in Athens to visit for a sample of delicious Greek food.
Our DIY Greek food tour started at TAF Coffee where we filled up on Greek Coffee and a Freddo Cappuccino. Then, we made our way to Krinos Bakery for some of the best Loukoumades in Athens.
After filling up on coffee and Greek donuts, we gave our tummies a break by exploring Syntagma Square and the museum in Syntagma Metro Station.
Next, we walked over to the base of the Acropolis to explore the Anafiotika neighborhood in Athens’ Plaka (Old Town). Anafiotika resembles the architecture of the Anafi Islands and it has charm for days!
After wondering through the alleys of Anafiotika, we made our way to Fresko Yogurt Bar for some local, authentic Greek Yogurt. This made Jordan’s day, y’all! Then, we checked out the Central Municipal Athens Market, which was a small adventure.
Next, we made our way to get some Greek gyros at Falafellas. Come to find out, these were more like Falafel wraps rather than gyros, but they were still good. Afterwards, we walked over to Ariston Bakery for some Greek pies!
Finally, we ended our Greek food tour in Athens at LUKUMADES. We ordered a basket of fresh loukoumade balls (aka Lokma) with ice cream and they were SO GOOD! They’re basically Greek donut holes with ice cream. What’s not to like?
To sum things up, doing a walking DIY food tour is the best way to see Athens. The full day only cost us 30.75 EUR for two people – 15.38 EUR each! And, we walked a total of 5 miles! The walking route for the food tour is 3.5 miles excluding to and from our Airbnb.
Let us know in the comments if you’ve been to any of these restaurants or sights in Athens or if you have other options to recommend for others to try!
Enjoy the video and we’ll see you in our next one as we keep GOING PLACES!
