Auchan, Decathlon... The Secrets of a Golden Family
They are one of the wealthiest and most powerful families in France. Their brands—Auchan, Decathlon, Leroy Merlin, Flunch, and Norauto—are among the French people’s favorites. Yet, their name remains unknown to the general public. The Mulliez family has mastered the art of discretion.
Cash Investigation investigated the secrets behind this family’s success, whose economic weight is estimated at 10% of French retail.
The fortune of this northern French family originates from their thread and wool stores, Phildar. Over time, they created 130 more brands. The Mulliez family now has 1,500 members—how do they manage their businesses? What values do they claim to uphold, and more importantly, do they truly respect them?
Some Mulliez family members have moved to Belgium. Is their love for the Belgian countryside linked to tax reasons?
The Cash Investigation team also analyzed the inner workings of the Mulliez business empire and how family members distribute dividends from their privately owned companies.
At a time when Auchan is announcing 2,389 job cuts, Gabriel Garcia investigated how the Mulliez family association may be limiting the redeployment of dismissed employees within other group brands.
Cash Investigation also looked into the worldwide success of Decathlon. The company controls its production costs down to the last detail—even if it means working with a problematic supplier. Our investigation revealed that one of Decathlon’s main Chinese subcontractors is suspected of using forced Uyghur labor.
