In January 1995, ahead of the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, ITN’s Nick Glass spoke to three survivors of the Nazi death camp. Victor Greenberg (1929-2024), Emil Stein (1930-2003), and Anita Lasker-Wallfisch (1925–) shared their experiences as children before the war, their years spent in Auschwitz, and their lives since. Each recounted several instances in which they cheated death, beginning with the process of selection upon arrival at the camp. They spoke of their loved ones who died in the gas chambers of Birkenau, and described the struggle of building lives as survivors in the years and decades after liberation.

ITN Archive is pleased to have digitised these interviews with Victor Greenberg, Emil Stein, and Anita Lasker-Wallfisch ahead of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, in order that their invaluable testimonies could be preserved and shared. Each had a unique experience of Auschwitz; all were agreed on the importance of bearing witness to the atrocities of the Holocaust while they were still able to do so. Of the three survivors interviewed by Glass, only Anita Lasker-Wallfisch survives. She is 99 years old.
