Australia's wetlands are home to a range of notorious predators. Freshwater crocodiles stealthily ambush fruit bats near forest rivers, while tiger snakes and water monitors dominate isolated waterholes, using venom and claws to conquer their prey. In the skies, white-bellied sea eagles patrol above, and water pythons crush their victims below. Archerfish use precision to dislodge prey, and saltwater crocodiles assert their dominance with brute strength. On land, the Inland Taipan, the world’s most venomous snake, and the larger, venom-resistant Mulga snake compete, but neither is the apex predator; that title goes to the Perentie, a formidable lizard that hunts kangaroos and dingoes. The Australian coastline, too, is a hub of deadly marine creatures, from the powerful great white shark to the venomous Irukandji jellyfish, all highlighting the paradox of Australia’s breathtaking yet perilous landscapes.
