Today, Mr. Nampula is cycling around Ayutthaya ruins.
We are traveling around the famous ruins in one day, but today we will go to the last spot.
■ Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon
This ruins, which is popular among Thai people and tourists, is a recommended ruins that you definitely want to visit when you go to Ayutthaya.
The ruins are located away from the old town, the center of Ayutthaya.
Therefore, during the war with Burma, this place was not completely destroyed, so it is in a good state of preservation.
It is a ruin that retains its appearance at that time. It is also a temple with a history built by the first king as a place of meditation for monks who went to Sri Lanka (Ceylon) for training.
The temple's landmark, the large pagoda, is 72 meters tall, and is about the height of an 18-story building. I'm surprised that people in the old days built such a big building.
This pagoda means "Victory pagoda". It is said that when the former King of Ayutthaya fought a one-on-one battle with the King of Burma while riding an elephant, the King of Ayutthaya won, so this big pagoda was built to commemorate it. So this place seems to be an auspicious place as a landmark of victory. The stupa can be climbed, and the pagoda's discontinuity offers sweeping views of Ayutthaya.
The temple also has a large reclining Buddha, which is also a must-see. It is said that if you put a coin on the sole of your foot, something lucky will happen.
■ Wat Phanan Choeng Worawihan
This temple is located at the confluence of the big rivers of Ayutthaya, and although it is on the opposite bank of the old city, it is a temple built in an important place, which is the gateway to Ayutthaya. Although this temple looks new from the outside, it is said that it was first built 26 years before Ayutthaya became the capital. Although this temple incorporates the Chinese architectural style, it can be seen that there has been exchange between Thailand and China since ancient times. It seems that many Chinese people lived in this area during the Ayutthaya dynasty. The Great Buddha in this temple was built before Ayutthaya became the capital and has a long history. There is a legend that this Buddha statue shed tears when Ayutthaya was destroyed by Burma. In the past, it seems that there was a Buddha statue outside the building, not inside the building, so it may have been a landmark that people who came to ancient Ayutthaya always saw.
