What is Azure Backup?
Azure Backup is a cloud-based service that provides simple, secure, and cost-effective solutions to back up your data and recover it from the Microsoft Azure cloud. It is designed to protect your data from various threats, including ransomware, human error, and accidental deletion.

How Azure Backup Works
__________________________
Create a Recovery Services Vault:
This is a storage entity in Azure that holds the backup data. You can create a Recovery Services Vault in the Azure portal.
Configure Backup Policies:
Define backup policies that specify the backup schedule (daily, weekly, etc.) and retention settings (how long backups are kept).
Enable Backup for Resources:
Apply the backup policies to the resources you want to protect, such as VMs, files, folders, and databases.
Monitor and Manage Backups:
Use the Azure portal to monitor the status of your backups, view backup reports, and manage backup jobs.
Restore Data:
In the event of data loss or corruption, you can restore data from the backups stored in the Recovery Services Vault. You can restore entire VMs, individual files, folders, or databases.

1. Different Ways to Set Up Azure VM Backup
a. While Creating the VM Itself, Enable Backup
When you create a new virtual machine (VM) in Azure, you can enable backup during the creation process. This involves:
Creating a Recovery Services Vault: This is where your backups will be stored.
Configuring Backup Settings: During the VM creation wizard, you can select the option to enable backup. You’ll need to specify the backup policy, which includes the backup schedule and retention settings1.
b. Post Creating the VM, Enable Backup
If you have an existing VM, you can enable backup by:
Navigating to the VM: In the Azure portal, go to the VM you want to back up.
Enabling Backup: Select the “Backup” option from the VM’s menu. You’ll be prompted to create or select a Recovery Services Vault and configure the backup policy1.
c. Enable Backup for Multiple VMs
To enable backup for multiple VMs:
Using Backup Center: Go to the Backup Center in the Azure portal.
Configuring Backup: Select multiple VMs and apply a backup policy to them. This can be done through the Azure portal, PowerShell, or Azure CLI1.
2. Create a Backup Policy
A backup policy defines the schedule and retention settings for your backups. To create a backup policy:
Navigate to Backup Center: In the Azure portal, go to Backup Center.
Create Policy: Select “Backup Policies” and then “+Add”. Choose “Azure Virtual Machine” as the policy type.
Configure Policy: Set the backup frequency (daily, weekly, etc.), retention period, and other settings. Save the policy and apply it to your VMs2.
3. Restore a Virtual Machine from Backup
To restore a VM from a backup:
Navigate to Backup Center: In the Azure portal, go to Backup Center and select “Restore”.
Select Restore Point: Choose the VM and the restore point you want to use.
Restore Options: You can either create a new VM, replace the existing VM, or restore the VM’s disks. Follow the prompts to complete the restore process3.
4. Restore Files or Folders from an Azure VM Backup
To restore individual files or folders:
Navigate to the VM: In the Azure portal, go to the VM and select “Backup”.
File Recovery: Select “File Recovery” from the Backup menu. Choose the recovery point and download the executable or script provided.
Run the Script: Run the downloaded script on your local machine to mount the backup and recover the files or folders you need4.
5. How to Set Up Backup Report
To set up backup reports:
Configure Log Analytics Workspace: Create a Log Analytics workspace in the same region as your Recovery Services Vault.
Enable Backup Reports: In the Backup Center, go to “Backup Reports” and link your Recovery Services Vault to the Log Analytics workspace.
View and Customize Reports: Use Azure Monitor and workbooks to view and customize your backup reports. You can also set up email notifications for periodic reports5.
I hope this helps! If you have any more questions or need further details, feel free to ask. 😊
