The exciting first ‘Brandenburg’ concerto – recorded here for All of Bach with Bojan Čičić – opens with two hunting horns barling through the rest of the music and deliberately disturbing the music. Listen to how they play three against four with bravura, and even clash with the harmony. Bach thus immediately sets the tone for his six ‘Brandenburg’ concertos which he sent by way of an open job application to the Margrave of Brandenburg in March 1721. He explores the potential of the orchestral instruments, both solo and in combination, in numerous ways.
