A lathe cut record is a vinyl record created by a cutter head while the music is playing. Imagine playing your vinyl record on your turntable. Instead of having a stylus to read the grooves on the record, a cutter head makes the grooves on a blank vinyl as the music plays.
Lathe cutting is the fastest way to make a vinyl record because we essentially cut the record live. Vinyl pressings, the other technique to produce a record, can take weeks to make because of the preproduction required to create the stamp.
In this video, Vinny Fieg, worker-owner at Backline, walks through our cutting process with a Rek-O-Kut Challenger.
