Sanjeev Sanyal and Chandrachud Ghose discuss Sachindranath Sanyal's book 'Bandi Jeevan: A Life in Captivity', which offers a gripping firsthand account of the early phase of India's struggle for independence. Sanjeev Sanyal highlights his family's roots, scholarly contributions, and tradition of resisting invaders. Sachindranath Sanyal, a prominent revolutionary held captive in Kaala Pani, detailed the efforts made and the tribulations faced by revolutionaries. Sachindranath Sanyal's role in forming the Hindustan Rebellion Army and his understanding that Indian independence required a rebellion in the Indian army, is underscored. Despite his efforts, Sachindranath Sanyal passed away before India gained independence, leaving behind a legacy of sacrifice and determination. The talk chronicles key events such as the attempt to kill Lord Hardinge, the Gadar Movement and the Kakori train robbery. Sanjeev Sanyal describes the role of the Sanatan Principles in defining the lives and actions of the revolutionaries. He ends with the story of devastation of Punjab, Bengal and Maharashtra in the aftermath of partition as a punishment for being the incubator for revolutionaries.
About the Speakers:
Sanjeev Sanyal is the Principal Economic Advisor to The Government of India, Former Deutsche Bank MD, urban theorist, environmentalist, and author, known for his multifaceted contributions. Sanyal has emerged as a prominent thinker and policy advocate. He has represented India in many international forums, including as co-chair of the Framework Working Group of G20 for five years. He continues to be a leading voice in shaping public discourse and policy debates on issues critical to the future of cities and economies worldwide.
Chandrachur Ghose, an author, researcher, and commentator focusing on history, economics, and environmental matters, earned his degrees from Visva Bharati and the University of Sussex. He co-authored "Conundrum: Subhas Bose's Life After Death," and is also a co-founder of Mission Netaji, a pressure group instrumental in the declassification of secret documents concerning Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.
