Without a doubt, bass scale length is one of the biggest determining factors in how a bass guitar plays, sounds, and feels. Fortunately these days, basses come in a whole slew of different scale lengths, so you've got plenty of options to pick from.

But with options comes confusion. What's the best scale length for metal? For Jazz? Blues? What about for players with small hands? Those that want more fundamental and less overtones?

Well lucky for you, we sat down with our friend Ian Allison (of Scott's Bass Lessons fame) to talk all about the different bass scale lengths you'll find out in the wild, and what's great about each of 'em.
